An ultrasound is a medical device that uses a handheld transducer to emit painless high-frequency sound waves into the body.
The transducer emits sound pulses that reflect off tissues and organs, producing echoes. The transducer then captures these echoes and turns them into images on the ultrasound machine.

What are ultrasound-guided injections?
Ultrasound-guided injections are medical procedures that use ultrasound to precisely locate the targeted treatment area, which is visible as localized tissue inflammation and swelling.
After accurately determining the exact site, we deliver an injection of anesthetic and steroids into the tissues, bursa, tendon, or joint.
These injections are minimally invasive and are typically performed in our office procedure rooms. They’re outpatient, meaning you can go home and go about your activities afterward. However, your provider may ask you to refrain from strenuous activity for the first 24 hours to give the medication time to take effect.
Ultrasound as a diagnostic tool
An ultrasound can tell us a lot about what’s going on in the body, especially in areas of inflammation and pain. We use this information to create a customized plan for the injection and pain relief.
For instance, before scheduling an injection, we may opt to examine the joint with ultrasound to obtain an accurate diagnosis. It’s less invasive and usually cheaper than other imaging studies, such as CT or MRI.
Advanced precision using ultrasound
Injections without ultrasound guidance may still work to alleviate pain and inflammation, but they don’t target the exact problem area. Ultrasound guidance allows us to see inside the joint to determine the precise area causing pain.
The real-time nature of the imaging allows us to visually direct the needle while avoiding surrounding blood vessels and nerves. This makes it safer than traditional injection methods.
Additionally, the live feedback from ultrasound allows us to ease the needle into the exact area of pain for optimal results. The more medication that gets into the problem area, the better the results.
What happens during and after the injection?
During an ultrasound-guided injection, we first ensure you’re comfortable in the procedure room. Depending on the treatment area, you may be sitting or lying on the table and wearing a gown.
We apply lubricating gel to the ultrasound transducer to ensure it glides effortlessly over the skin. Once we locate the exact problem spot in the joint, we continue to track the injection delivery with the imaging technology. This helps ensure the medication goes directly where it is needed.
Our team then cleans the injection site, monitors the area for a few minutes, and places a bandage over the puncture site. We’ll supply oral and written aftercare instructions and directions for follow-up visits before you leave the office.
