When you are dealing with numbness, tingling, burning pain, weakness, muscle cramping, or radiating symptoms into the arms or legs, one of the most important questions is: Where is this really coming from?
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are specialized tests used to evaluate how your nerves and muscles are functioning. These studies help determine whether symptoms are coming from a pinched nerve in the neck or back, a peripheral nerve problem such as carpal tunnel syndrome, or another nerve or muscle disorder.
At Orange County Spine & Sports, EMG is used as an extension of the physical exam to provide a more precise diagnosis and guide the right treatment plan.
What EMG / NCS Can Diagnose
EMG and nerve conduction studies may help evaluate:
-
Pinched nerves in the neck or back
-
Cervical radiculopathy
-
Lumbar radiculopathy / sciatica
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Ulnar neuropathy
-
Peripheral neuropathy
-
Muscle weakness
-
Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
-
Burning or radiating nerve pain
Why EMG Matters
Imaging such as MRI or X-ray can show structure, but EMG / NCS helps evaluate function.
That matters because not every abnormal MRI finding is the source of symptoms. EMG can help clarify whether a nerve is actually irritated, compressed, or damaged, and how severe the problem may be.
A more accurate diagnosis helps determine whether you need:
-
Physical therapy
-
Medication management
-
Image-guided injection treatment
-
Further workup
-
Surgical referral
-
Or a different next step altogether
Less guessing. More precision. Medicine behaves better when you corner it with data.
What to Expect During the Test
An EMG / nerve conduction study usually includes two parts:
Nerve Conduction Study (NCS):
Small electrical impulses are used to measure how well signals travel through the nerves.
Electromyography (EMG):
A thin recording electrode is used to assess electrical activity in selected muscles.
The test is performed in the office and is generally well tolerated. The exact areas tested depend on your symptoms and exam findings.
Common Symptoms That May Need EMG Testing
You may benefit from EMG / NCS if you have:
-
Hand numbness or tingling
-
Arm pain traveling from the neck
-
Grip weakness
-
Sciatica
-
Leg numbness
-
Foot weakness
-
Burning nerve pain
-
Muscle cramping or twitching
-
Unexplained weakness in an arm or leg
Why Patients Choose Orange County Spine & Sports
At Orange County Spine & Sports, electrodiagnostic testing is part of a comprehensive musculoskeletal and nerve evaluation. Rather than viewing EMG as a stand-alone test, we use it alongside your history, physical exam, and imaging to understand the full picture.
Our goal is simple: identify the true pain generator and build the smartest path forward.
